Year 9 Careers Event: Building Employability Skills with the Army
Over the last 2 days our Year 9 students have braved the heat and taken part in an exciting and inspiring two-day careers workshop delivered by the Army. Throughout the event, students developed essential employability skills including teamwork, leadership, communication, and resilience.
The event began with an engaging presentation that introduced students to a wide range of roles within the Army. This helped to challenge perceptions and broaden students’ understanding of potential career pathways, highlighting opportunities in areas such as engineering, healthcare, sport, logistics, and animal care — including some unexpected roles such as veterinary work and professional football.
Following the presentation, students headed out onto the field to participate in a series of practical, hands-on activities designed to challenge and develop key skills. These included:
- A teamwork challenge to foster collaboration
- A communication activity where students guided a blindfolded partner to safety while avoiding obstacles
- A STEM challenge to encourage innovation and critical thinking
- A reaction time activity to test focus and agility
- A logic puzzle involving tyre movement to promote strategic thinking
- An equipment showcase, where students could explore and try out Army gear
These activities highlighted the importance of problem-solving, perseverance, and leadership, while encouraging students to step outside of their comfort zones and work effectively as a team.
