Uniformed Organisations Careers Event

Year 8 students recently took part in an exciting and interactive careers event, giving them the opportunity to learn about the 11 different uniformed organisations available to young people and how involvement in these groups can help them develop valuable skills and stand out from the crowd in the future.

Throughout the workshops, students explored the wide range of employability skills that uniformed organisations help to develop, including teamwork, communication, leadership, resilience and problem-solving. More importantly, they had the chance to put these skills into action through a variety of engaging activities.

A volunteer from St John Ambulance delivered practical first aid training, teaching students how to perform CPR, use a defibrillator and respond appropriately if someone is choking. These life-saving skills gave students an insight into the importance of remaining calm under pressure and helping others in an emergency.

Students also enjoyed a series of challenges led by the Sea Cadets. One activity saw teams competing to build the tallest Lego tower while meeting a set of specific requirements before time ran out. Another challenge appeared straightforward at first, as students had to arrange consecutive numbers in order. However, the task quickly became much more difficult when students had to work without their dominant hand and collaborate with classmates they had not chosen to work with. These activities encouraged students to develop communication, adaptability and teamwork skills.

This particular activity was delivered by one of our own Year 11 students, who is a member of the Sea Cadets. The student did a fantastic job leading the session and inspiring our Year 8 students. Having a current student share her experiences also gave participants the opportunity to ask questions and gain a genuine insight into what being part of a uniformed organisation is really like. Well done, for being such a positive role model for our younger students.

Another command task challenged students to navigate their way through a maze of squares, working together and communicating effectively without triggering the dreaded "boom". If the boom was heard, the entire team had to return to the start and begin again. It was fantastic to see students demonstrating resilience, determination and cooperation as they tackled the challenge together.

We were also delighted to welcome the Mayor, who visited during the event and was highly impressed by both the variety of activities on offer and the enthusiasm and engagement shown by our students. It was wonderful to see our Year 8 students embracing every challenge, demonstrating excellent teamwork and showcasing the positive attitudes that will serve them well in the future.

The day was a brilliant showcase of the opportunities available to young people through uniformed organisations and highlighted how these experiences can directly support future career aspirations. Students developed important employability skills while having plenty of fun along the way.

A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who gave their time to support the event, and a special thank you to Mark Heywood from YOU West Midlands for organising such a valuable and memorable experience for our students. It was a fantastic display of what students can get involved with now that will directly benefit them in their future careers, while helping them build essential employability skills in an enjoyable and engaging way.
