Engineering the Future: Year 10 Students Take on Industry Challenge

A group of selected Year 10 students had the exciting opportunity to take part in a STEM engineering challenge delivered by In-Comm Training.
The workshop began with students learning about the apprenticeship opportunities available through In-Comm, what apprenticeships involve, and the range of companies that could potentially employ them in the future. This gave students a valuable insight into alternative pathways into employment and the exciting careers available within the engineering and manufacturing sectors.
The main challenge of the day saw students working in teams of four to design and build a mechanical device using K'NEX. Their task was to create a device capable of transporting mixed rivets 200mm before separating them into three different sizes. This real-world engineering brief encouraged students to think creatively, solve problems and apply practical engineering principles.
Within each team, students took on specific job roles, including Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineer and Maintenance Engineer, giving them a taste of how engineering projects are managed in industry. By working within these roles, students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of collaboration and responsibility within a professional team.
Throughout the challenge, students demonstrated a range of employability skills, including communication, leadership, teamwork and problem-solving. Points were awarded at various stages of the workshop for their teamwork, design process and progress towards meeting the brief.
The final round of points was awarded during team presentations, where students demonstrated their designs to the rest of the group. It was fantastic to see students showcasing their engineering knowledge, creativity and presentation skills while responding to feedback and evaluating their solutions.
The event provided an excellent opportunity for students to experience the challenges and rewards of engineering whilst developing skills that will support them in their future education and careers.
A huge thank you to Leanne Mee for delivering such an engaging and inspiring session, and to The Orlik Family for generously funding this opportunity for our students. Their support enabled our students to gain valuable insight into apprenticeships, engineering careers and the employability skills needed for future success.
