An insight into the criminal world- HMP Swinfen YOI

Aldridge School's Year 13 Psychology and Sociology students had the opportunity to visit HMP Swinfen Hall, where they gained a fascinating and thought-provoking insight into the realities of the criminal justice system. As a working prison, the visit provided students with an authentic understanding of life behind bars through a series of informative talks and practical experiences.

Students learned about the day-to-day lives of both prisoners and prison officers, exploring the challenges, responsibilities, and routines that shape prison life. They were also given the chance to examine evidence bags and confiscated items giving a hands-on experience that brought many of their classroom studies to life.

A highlight of the day was a presentation from PACT (Prison Advice and Care Trust), which focused on the important role that families play in supporting rehabilitation and reducing reoffending. Students gained valuable insight into the counselling, guidance, and support services available to prisoners and their loved ones, helping them appreciate the wider social impact of imprisonment.

The visit proved to be a highly influential experience, deepening students' understanding of crime, punishment, rehabilitation, and social justice. For many Aldridge School students, the experience sparked a growing interest in careers within forensic psychology, criminology, probation services, prison and rehabilitation services, counselling, and the wider criminal justice sector.

By connecting classroom learning with real-world practice, the visit offered an invaluable educational experience and inspired students to explore future pathways within the prison, probation, and forensic professions.
