Alumni Spotlight: Christopher Jones Visits Aldridge School During Careers Week to Raise Aspirations
Aldridge School was delighted to welcome former pupil Christopher Jones, now a Senior Data Engineer at UK Export Finance, who returned to share his career journey as part of our ongoing commitment to raising aspirations and showcasing diverse pathways for our students.
Christopher, who attended Aldridge School from 2009 to 2016, spoke about his varied experiences during his time here, including his favourite subjects—Drama, History and Geography—as well as challenges such as English, where he preferred “concrete answers” like those found in Maths. He also reflected on the hobbies and activities that shaped his interests, from computer games to mentoring younger pupils and tutoring GCSE Maths.
After achieving ALevels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Economics, Christopher progressed to the London School of Economics, where he studied Economics with a strong focus on data. He encouraged pupils to take opportunities when they arise, explaining how a government internship helped build skills that supported his next steps.
Christopher outlined the realities of starting his career as an Assistant Economist at HM Treasury, sharing how he navigated early challenges and later moved into IT consulting before finding his passion in data engineering. He emphasised the importance of resilience, self-worth and work–life balance, noting that setbacks are a natural part of any career journey.
Now working in a hybrid role helping to modernise UKEF’s data systems, Christopher explained how the organisation supports UK exporters through guarantees, working capital support and insurance policies. He also highlighted key future skills—particularly in digital and data—as well as soft skills such as communication, teamwork and continuous learning.
Aldridge School thanks Christopher for returning to inspire the next generation and show pupils the many possibilities ahead of them.
