Careers Event – Year 8 Royal Navy STEM Workshop

Across two days, all of Year 8 had the opportunity to hear about some of the 140 different job roles within the Royal Navy before undertaking a STEM challenge.

The workshop began with an overview of some of the rescue missions the Royal Navy undertake and the careers that are involved in the Royal Navy. Students heard about Leading Seaman Sally Hughes who won a medal for her bravery rescuing people from a boat in extreme weather. A discussion was held with students about how they could attract attention if they were in trouble at sea before the Royal Navy set the challenge of building a flare that could be fired. Students built their flares and then went outside to fire them, only succeeding if their flare went higher than the building. The Royal Navy then provided a Q&A session for students to ask anything about what they had done during the session or the Royal Navy.

A great experience for the students and a massive thanks to the Royal Navy for coming to deliver such an engaging workshop.
