Careers Event – Kier
Our Year 12 Core Maths and Business students recently had a valuable opportunity to hear from representatives of Kier, who shared insights into their industry and highlighted some of the local projects they’re currently working on.
Rob Prentice, a quantity surveyor spoke about what his role entailed as well as how to get into his career. He showed students some of the projects he has worked on including the Black Country Museum, before he explained some of the terminology that can come up in his career.
John Pugh then explained his job role as a Contracts Manager talking about his route into this career and some of the jobs he does day to day. He described the difference between a Project Manager and a Contracts Manager as well as getting some students up to identify parts of one of the projects. He spoke about ecofriendly steps that they now take on new builds to ensure longevity.
The talk was then focused on Gantt Charts which students have been learning about in both Core Maths and Business lessons. This gave them the opportunity to see how the theory they have been learning is used in industry.
Ashish Patel then spoke to students about the career pathways and qualifications available. He explained how degree apprenticeships work with Kier and what they offer.
A big thanks to Kier for providing this fantastic opportunity and to our wonderful speakers:

Rob Prentice – Quantity Surveyor
Ashish Patel – Regional Social Responsibility Manager
